Fiber Glass

Fixing Fiberglass

It's the weekend baby...lets get itchy with fiberglass!  It's still spring time here in Houston Texas so the temperature hasn't gotten so hot that proper apparel can be worn with out melting into a puddle on the floor.  Here's Brandon taking a cruise on the creeper as we prepare the fiber glass components.

The reddish / orange thing is the creeper, not to mistake Brandon as a Minecraft character

Brandon here, now that dad has had his fun with me, here's what I learned today. I watched the application of the resin over the fiberglass mat. When my dad mixed up the mixture it did not smell so great. We put a base coat of resin on first then we lade the fiberglass sheet, next we rolled the epoxy onto the front of the glass sheet. I think that the smell of it killed all my brain cells.

Dad here again, I've chosen to use 2.0 ounce fiber mat as the lay-up material to repair a few areas under the car. Brandon was intrigued by the whole process, especially when this white mat turned transparent once the resin was applied.

This white material is the fiberglass mat

There seems to have been some poor material choices used in the past to repair fiberglass.  Although the picture below is the post application of fiberglass, you can see where the previous owner chose to use basic body filler (maybe tiger hair) when it's easy enough to do the job correctly with fiberglass.  I used a basic disposable foam roller (used for paint) which works for the duration of the resin's pot life.  The roller will start to breakdown once exposed to the epoxy resin but they are convenient and cheap for this disposable approach.

Once I finish underneath, I'll grind out the material on the top side (body filler) and do a layer or two there to ensure stability.  There are a few questionable areas of work.  So, over the past 51 years, there has been some damage and repairs that really makes you wonder...what were you thinking?
