Fiber Glass

Image
Fixing Fiberglass It's the weekend baby...lets get itchy with fiberglass!  It's still spring time here in Houston Texas so the temperature hasn't gotten so hot that proper apparel can be worn with out melting into a puddle on the floor.  Here's Brandon taking a cruise on the creeper as we prepare the fiber glass components. The reddish / orange thing is the creeper, not to mistake Brandon as a Minecraft character Brandon here, now that dad has had his fun with me, here's what I learned today. I watched the application of the resin over the fiberglass mat. When my dad mixed up the mixture it did not smell so great. We put a base coat of resin on first then we lade the fiberglass sheet, next we rolled the epoxy onto the front of the glass sheet. I think that the smell of it killed all my brain cells. Dad here again, I've chosen to use 2.0 ounce fiber mat as the lay-up material to repair a few areas under the car. Brandon was intrigued...

Pressing out the rear shaft

Pressing out the rear shafts on C2 Corvette: Hi this is Brandon (the son) .this morning I used a impact wrench and gear puller setup  to press the rear axel out of the carrier bearings.  As usual my dad got started at 8;00 in the morning before I could eat breakfast.        I think that this project is a chance for me to learn new things. And for him to give me some of his knowledge. I am looking forward to picking out the paint that we are going to put on the car. and maybe even getting to drive the car when I an old enough. Dad here, this is the setup we used to press the shaft out of the carrier.  Since a standard gear puller didn't have the right alignment for the bolts we needed, I used a plate of steel (thanks to the "Metal Shop" which gave me this scrap) and drilled some hole for the bolts.  I still leveraged the use of the gear puller as the driving force with it's plate beneath the newly made p...

Cleaning up the frame

Image
Well, I guess it's been a while and there's a lot going on with the project.  Below there is a series of pictures showing body removal, frame status, and stripped frame headed out for sandblasting and powder coating. Sending the frame out for powder coating was quite the adventure.  Luckily, there is a shop close by but getting it there turned out to be a challenge.  The shop didn't offer any transport service so another means was required.  I called 2-3 wrecking companies to bring a rollback for transport.  They took my information and said they would call me right back...ok.  Well, no response back from those clowns.  Since it was the evening before my self imposed deadline to get the frame to the shop, I decided I would rent the local Home Depot flat bed truck since getting a trailer and towing behind our SUV would have been a logistical PIA. So, I arrived at the Home Depot promptly at 6:00am Friday morning (4/10/15) since the tr...

Arrival

Image
Well, the car arrive on April 1st at 7:45pm and we safely tucked it away in the garage for the night. This morning as I was researching parts and other information and found the following post which captured our car: http://www.corvetteblogger.com/2015/02/17/corvettes-on-ebay-his-and-hers-1964-project-corvette-sting-rays/ I'm not sure how long the post will be available but hopefully you'll get a chance to read.  Ironically, the sale they mention did not get completed and later listed each car separately for sale.  Well, the condition of the car matched the posting but the "ready for paint" is a little miss stated.  Overall I'm quite pleased with buying a car sight unseen since a number of items, not mentioned in the posting, showed up with the car.
